This is a hymn that i believe many Christians may have heard before. Sometimes i wonder if anyone really think about the bible Moses when singing this hymn.

Actually as I was listening to the hymn, and reading the lyrics, i saw reference to Mount Pisgah . This is the mount on which Moses died, and God buried him. (Deut 34:1)

So if we would want to fully appreciate this hymn, it must be viewed from the life of Moses,

Title: Sweet Hour Of Prayer
Lyrics ; William Walford
Music: William Bradbury

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempters snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”

On stanza one we can see that Moses relied on the sweet hour of prayer to escape the tempters snare. Especially during the seasons of distress and grief. Indeed, when Moses first decided to work for God to bring the children of Israel out from the land of Egypt. He went through many hardships, and these are the times of sorrow and despair. You can see how Moses confides with God there

1. The people initially do not believe him, and was angry with Moses when Pharaoh wanted them to make bricks without straw (Ex 5:21)
2. Complaint against him at the Red sea (Ex 14:11-12)
3. At the waters of Marah (Ex 15:24)
4. Wilderness of Sin (Ex 16: 3)
5. At Rephidim (Ex 17:2)
6. At Sinai before the Golden calf (Ex 32)
7. At Kibroth Hattaavah (Num 11:10-15) This seems to be Moses limit
8. When Miraim and Aaron both opposed him (Num 12:1-2)
9. At the banks of Jordan (Kadesh)(Num 14:2-4)
10. During the rebellion of Korah (Num 16:41-45)
11. At the waters of Meribah (Num 20:2) This incident made Moses unable to enter Canaan.
12. When Moab was leading Israel to Sin (Num 25)

All of this happened in the last 40 years of Moses life, and it was indeed with the help of God and through his prayers where God comfort him

The second stanza talks about the bliss that Moses felt whenever he was praying, sometimes I wish i would be able to feel the same way as him

The third stanza talks about God’s willingness to bless everyone who comes to him through prayer. Therefore we should cast our cares on him for he cares for us (1 Pet 5:7).

The final stanza was the climax of the hymn, where God bids Moses to climb on top of mount Pisgah, where God showed him the entire land, and allow Moses to die in his Bosom, here it shows that Moses was very happy as he was finally reaching the better promise land which is build by God. (Heb 11:13-16).

It is hope that all of us can feel the same bliss whenever we pray to God in spirit
