May 2009

Actually i was suppose to be preparing for my CCNP exams, but i heard this song played over the radio which I have not heard for a long time.

Well, this song I remember is quite old, perhaps around my polytechnic days which is, around 5-6 years ago. It was used in some period drama that was showing how Chinese immigrants left China to make a living in Singapore. It was sung by a Chinese pop group called Power Station and I honestly think their songs are really unique. The lyrics of the song is very nicely written in Chinese and quite meaningful too.

I think there are many people who have lost their jobs in the economic crisis, that includes me.. So i decided to translate this and splash it on my blog for all the readers who lost their jobs and are despairing not to lose hope.

Translating it is quite tough, as i think there are many expressions that are lost in this translation, so, feel free to give me any pointers and i would update the blog accordingly

Theres a solution out of every difficulty,
Once you find it, you will be blessed
Whatever that I had,
I placed them into my luggage
Yet my longing will never be taken away

As the skies are covered by haze of doubts and suspicion
and my heart is beating vigorously
Although my ship is about to sail
My future is still blurry
and i wonder if that would be the place where i would return home in glory.

I sailed across the ocean,
and i can take the hardship
I won’t despair as I know heaven will always provide help, one way or the other.
Although the reality seems to be accused, yet in my dreams there are blessing
As all of us are bought together by fate, to weather the trails and hardship together

Under the scorching sun and though we are feeling faint
We must not be trapped by our weakness
Even if our lives are filled of frustration and dashed hope, Believe that destiny is variable
just hope for the dew after the drought.

Lately it seems to me that the Singapore weather is turning a bit insane. Honestly I think that it is just nature getting back on us humans for destroying the environment.

Out of my randomness, I suddenly recall my friends theme song for our polytechnic video production “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. So this song is delicated to the group of Polytechnic Buddies in the “Lonely Hearts Club”

No Rain
by Blind Melon

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin’ the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
and speak my point of view
But it’s not sane, It’s not sane

I just want some one to say to me
I’ll always be there when you wake
Ya know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I’ll have it made

And I don’t understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there’s no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away, but it’s a great escape

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
ya don’t like my point of view
ya think I’m insane
Its not sane……it’s not sane

Hmm This is one song that i saw on my friends blog and i requested his help to translate it as i do not have language expertise in Tagalog.

This song is sang by Michael V which is a Filipino comedian. I was askingfor the meaning of the songs from my Filipino friends, and they told me its about the Indian traders in Manila, they are the Filipino versions of loan sharks and “convenient store” owners.

This song contains the melody of “The Streets of Cairo” aka “The Poor Country Maid”. Its the famous snake charmer tune, and is typically used to represent Desert, Arabia, Egypt, India , Belly Dancing and Snake Charming. It is as symbolic as the Oriental Riff that you hear in the song “Kung Fu Fighting”

After reading the lyrics, i realised i have a fair share of being cheated by rogue traders Sim Lim square.. and strangely the experience is somewhat similar to the song.

Ahoy, ahay, mga manoy, mga manay
Ako’ng inyong lingkod Didjay Vijay
Nandito ‘ko para maghanap-buhay
At your service DJ Bumbay

Pumili na kayo, maganda na mura pa
Ito ang aking mga paninda
Medyo may konting mga diperensya
Pero lahat original, hindi pirata

Meron akong banig, kasya ang sampu
Wala lang hihiga, lahat nakatayo
Gusto mo plantsa para sa damit
Pero yung handle ang umiinit

Kung naiinitan, mag-electric fan
Ang umiikot ay ‘yung katawan
Porselanang arinola galing Pakistan
May factory defect, sa loob ang hawakan

Meron akong kalan na gawa sa Japan
Lumalabas ang apoy doon sa pihitan
Kaha de yero para di manakawan
Pero hanggang ngayon hindi ko pa mabuksan

Bagong cellphone, tatak Nokia
Motolite ang tatak ng baterya nya
May tv rin ako, mura lang, brand new
Kaya lang ang screen merong grado

Halika na kayo, wag kayong mahiya
Umiikot ako buong Maynila
Minsan naglalakad, minsan nakamotor
Four gives, five-six, libre door-to-door

I’m your friendly neighborhood hulugan
Didjay Vijay wag nyong katakutan
Come on every all, come on every one
Sumabay sa tugtog, DJ break it down

Galing Amerika at buong Asia

Meron akong Rolex, uy bagay
Maraming diamong, isa lang ang kamay
Brand new flat screen colored tv
Ang kulay ng palabas itim at puti

May rubber shoes ako tatak Adidas
May factory defect, sa loob ang sintas
Kailangan mo ng shoes, panterno sa barong
Meron akong boots sa harap ang takong

Kung ang business mo ay construction
Mura lang, kuha na, de-pedal na pison
Masakit ang mata, pagod maghapon
Meron akong eye drop na roll-on

Bili na ng kutsikyo, made in Japan
Ay napakatalim lalo na yung hawakan
Gintong wallclock galing Switzerland
Pero baliktad sa harap ang sabitan

Next time pagbalik ko, i will bring a lot more

Gen 20

Background to Gen 20
Gen 20 talks about the story of Abraham and Abimelech, Abraham move south wards and Abimelech took a fancy of Sarah and wanted to make her his wife. Abraham being afraid told Sarah to only introduces him as her brother

This round God interfered and prevented Abimelech from sinning against God.

1. Was Abimelech aware of his sins initially?

2. How God prevented Abimelech from sinning?

Answers and Thoughts

  1. Abimelech was unaware that Sarah is the wife of Abraham (Gen 20:4-5). However, God is a God of Justice and would not allow sin to continue, even if it’s unintentional sins.
  2. God appeared to Abimelech in a dream (Gen 20:3) and he closed up the womb of the household of Abimeleh (Gen 20:18). Using it as a warning to Abimelech and preventing him from sinning. Sometimes as we live our lives, can we hear the warning signs sent from God to us? God will always send warnings and messages to his children to prevent them from sinning. This is actually the love of God

This song seems to have been used very often for since its first written in 1974. Used in a Kung Fu Baby Sequence, Kung Fu Panda, in fact, i can be hear this whenever theres something kung fu attached to it. It was often resung by many people.

This song is called Kung Fu fighting.. haha so lets just hear it

Kung Fu Fighting
By Carl Douglas

Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing

They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down
It’s an ancient Chineese art and everybody knew their part
From a feint into a slip, and kicking from the hip

Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing

There was funky Billy Chin and little Sammy Chung
He said here comes the big boss, lets get it on
We took a bow and made a stand, started swinging with the hand
The sudden motion made me skip now we’re into a brand knew trip

Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they did it with expert timing

(repeat)..make sure you have expert timing
Kung-fu fighting, had to be fast as lightning

Gen 19
Background to Gen 19

Gen 19 records the destruction of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah; it could be broken up into 3 sections
Gen 19:1-11, describes the state of morality of the city of Sodom as they gathered themselves outside the house of Lot

Gen 19:12-29, describes the reluctance of Lot to leave the city of Sodom and Gods justice and compassion as he delivered the family of Lot from the impending destruction of Sodom

Gen 19:30-36, describes the effect of Sodom on the family of Lot, how the daughters committed sin with their father.

  1. Do the people of Sodom like the family of Lot?
  2. Why is Lot reluctant to leave the city of Sodom?
  3. What are the effects of Sodom on the life of the family of Lot? What warning does it serves for us today?

Answers and Thoughts

  1. The people of Sodom do not like the family of Lot, we can see this in their response to Lot in Gen 19:17. In fact they were not happy with the fact that Lot has a higher moral values compared to them and keeps being a judge among the people. They wanted to do harm to Lot as well. This reminded me of what Jesus said in Jn 15:17-19. The world does not like the believers of God because they are shunning away from the light and they do not want to know about the light in the word of God. However, the apostles had also encourage us to continue live peaceably with those around us (Rom 12:17-19)
  2. Lots reluctance to leave the city can be seen from the speed of his departure. He lingered in the city even after the angels told him to run (Gen 19:15-16). And they have to drag the hand of Lot, his wife and the two daughters out of the city in order to save them. Lots wife missed the city, turned back and became a pillar of salt (Gen 19:26)what is the thing in the world that takes our sight away from God? For Lot, it is the many processions that he had tied his heart to. Jesus once said, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt 6:21). Like the city of Sodom, we all know that God would one day destroy and judge the world we are in, at the brink of Gods judgment, will we continue to linger in the city, or would we choose to follow God’s instruction and flee?

The effects of Sodom on the family of Lot can be seen in a few instances
a. Lots response to the demands of the people of Sodom (Gen 19:6)
b. The daughters idea of committing incest with their father came from “The custom of
all the world” which should come from Sodom (Gen 19:30)
Sometimes, we may unknowingly start to adopt the standards of the world into our lives. Just like Lot slowly finds shift his morality and his judgment and almost used a smaller sin to cover a bigger sin. As believers living in a world of sin, we must constantly remember that we are actually the people of God. Hence we should all learn not to love the world or to be part of the world

Lately, I have been busy writing simple bible study notes for my church bible reading campaign. Actually its a very simple one.. And I decided to post them to my blog one by one too.

Gen 18
Background to Gen 18

Gen18:1-15 records of Abraham receiving the Lord and his angels while they were en route to judge the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. It was at the terebinth trees of Mamre. In the past, especially among the nomadic people, whenever there are travelers who passed the tents of nomads, they would invite them to rest and show hospitality to the travelers.

Here we can see how Abraham served the guest with enthusiasm and it is at this time, where he unknowingly attended to God, and there God blessed Abraham that he would have a son the next year. Initially Sarah did not believe and laughed.

Gen 8:16-22 talks about the time when God revealed to Abraham that he was about to judge the city of Sodom and Gomorrah for their sins, and Abraham interceded on behalf of the city. Here we can learn a lot about effective prayers.

1. Why did Sarah laugh when the travelers said “Sarah your wife will have a son”?

2. As Abraham pleaded with God for the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, why did he stop at 10 and not go down further, what can we learn from this?

1. Initially, when Sarah overheard the conversation between Abram and the travelers, she was away from them behind the tent door (Gen 18:10). She thinks that it is impossible for her to bear children as she sees the fact that both Abram and she was well advance in age. (Gen 18:11)
Sometimes in life, we tend to always focus on the current facts around us, and we tend to forget the promises that God had given us. If Sarah were to remember the promises made to Abram by the Lord in Gen 17:19, she would know that God is going to fulfill his promise and not laugh about it.
So in whatever situation we meet in life, we need to remember that we have a God who is almighty and there is nothing too difficult for God to do (Gen 18:13-14)

2. In fact, Abraham stopped at 10 because he knows that it is only reasonable. We have to recall that Abram is well aware that his nephew Lot is living in the city of Sodom, and Lot had many processions and servants too. (Gen 13:5-6). Let’s try to give a count to the existing family of Lot, Lot and his wife, his 2 daughter, 2 sons in law. Which would add up to 6, and I would believe Lot would have more than 4 servants, which will add up to around 10.

Abraham was successful in his interceding for the city because of a few reason,
1. He understand that God is a God of justice (Gen 18:24-25)
2. He knows that he is just a mere man and he is asking for Gods compassion (Gen 18:27-28)
3. He knows when to stop (Gen 18:32)
so in our prayers, we should learn to place our trust in the justice and compassion of our Lord. And as we pray, we should also remember that we should be asking for Gods will to be done.
