Alright this hymn is requsted by a friend, as our church chior would
be singing this for a couple in their marriage ceremony

Title: O Perfect Love
Lyrics By: Dorothy F Gurney
Music By: Joseph Barnby

O perfect Love, all human thought transcending,
Lowly we kneel in prayer before Thy throne,
That theirs may be the love which knows no ending,
Whom Thou forevermore dost join in one.

O perfect Life, be Thou their full assurance,
Of tender charity and steadfast faith,
Of patient hope and quiet, brave endurance,
With childlike trust that fears nor pain nor death.

Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow;
Grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife,
And to life’s day the glorious unknown morrow
That dawns upon eternal love and life.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
Through Jesus Christ, Thy coeternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.

This is another hymn during theological course time that made me ponder about its lyrics. This hymn is inspired from Psalm 121 which reads

Psalm 121 (NKJV)
A Song of Ascents
1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills-
From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8 The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.

This is one of the hymns that was sung when the Israelites when they ascend to Jerusalem for the 3 Annual Feast. So I guess the hills describe here by the Psalmist refer to Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

Lately I have been pretty down about many things that happen in my life. How things just suddenly fall apart. Although By this time in my walk of faith, I believe for sure that God have not abandoned me. As he has proven to me many times, that even though I was faithless, he remains faithful and he continues to be my keeper despites the time I abandoned him silently.

In this hymn, God is reminding me to look to the hills once again and remember that my God is the one who made heaven and earth, is the one who neither slumber or sleep and he watches over those who love him. He also promised to preserve me in the midst of all those evil.

I just need to open my heart and seek his will. That is all he requires me to do now… I certainly hope I can do it.

I will lift up my eyes

Background to Gen 23

Gen 23 talks about the death of Sarah and Abraham buying a piece of land from Ephron to bury Sarah in. In fact, this piece of land would later on be the burial place for Abraham, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah.

Questions
1. Why did Abraham reject taking the burial place from the sons of Heth?
Answers and Thoughts

  1. Although Abraham is indeed a mighty prince among the people, and he refuse to take advantage of the people around hm. Although he is well aware that God has given the land of Canaan as an inheritance (Gen 13:14-18). But Abraham is aware that God has his own timing to fulfill that promise. The Author of Hebrews said that Abraham longed more for the heavenly city more than the physical one (Heb 11:9-10)

Actually I know this is a song that my friend liked a lot. And she had not been talking to me for sometime. So I just have the urge to translate this and ask her to come and take a look.

But after reading the lyrics i realized that the lyrics is very appealing to ladies. But again.. since I have read it already, I might as well translate it as a challenge.

As I am doing it, then I realize I lack the poetic ability, expressive ability of a lady, hence, this translation will be VERY inaccurate or funny to some… Hence, do give me some advices and please do not laugh your teeth out 😉

The English Translation is like this
We met in the midst of many, yet separated without a chance meet again
As I awaken, the windows sills were darken, waiting for the moonlight.
I would not be sadden as I believe that our fates are still inter wined.
So I let the time passed, waiting as the clock is ticking

As I watch the skies and the rain drops, as it washes away the fallen leaves
As my tears moisten the pillow, and it’s soften by its gentleness
I wait till the next year, till the Autumn leaves was red throughly
Allowing the clock to tick slowly, and stop at the times where the flowers bloom

(Chorus)
It is not because of loneliness which made me think of you.
But its due to my thoughts of you which creates this loneliness
As my tears are flowing slowly, the surroundings became silent
It is because of your love that made me tolerant
As my longing for you passes quickly
as the moonlight pilfers my dream softly.
Would it be sufficient just to miss you on those sleepless nights?
(Chorus Ends)

As I watch the skies and the rain drops, as it washes away the fallen leaves
As my tears moisten the pillow, and it’s soften by its gentleness
I wait till the next year, till the Autumn leaves was red throughly
Allowing the clock to tick slowly, and stop at the times where the flowers bloom

(Repeat Chorus 3X)

Would it be sufficient just to miss you on those sleepless nights?

Background to Gen 22

Genesis 22 talks about the pinnacle of Abraham faith. In this chapter, God gave Abraham a very big test. He wants Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering to the Lord.

But just when Abraham was about to take the knife and slay his son, God provided a ram for Abraham to complete his sacrifice.

God gave Abraham even more blessing for this act of faith.

Questions

  1. How can we know that Abraham is confident that Isaac would not be harm in any way?
  2. How can we see the faith of Abraham as well as the faith of Isaac from this story?

Answers and Thoughts

  1. Abraham when he was on this trip gave a very specific instruction to his servants that they would return back to them after the sacrifice. (Gen 22:5). In fact the Author of Hebrews commented that Abraham believed in the promise of God (Heb 11:: 17-19) and is very confident that God will raise Isaac up even if he is dead.
Sometimes in our Christian walk in life, are we able to follow Gods instructions fully? Over here, God gave Abraham a very difficult instruction to follow. And only by following Gods command then will we receive blessings from God.
  2. Abraham faith can be seen throughout the Journey. If we were to read of God’s promises to Abraham in Gen 17:19. It would not have make sense that God wanted to kill Isaac, so Abraham moved on without any doubt.

Isaac’s faith can be seen that he did not resist Abraham and willingly allow Abraham to bind him up and to be laid on the Altar. Isaac could have easily struggled to run away, yet he was obedient to God all the way,

Hmmm no particular for putting this song together, I just find that Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban make a excellent duet couple. Their voices really complemented each other. I really miss the voice of Sarah Brightman in the musical Phantom Of The Opera

So I think I will post it here so that people can sing this.

There For Me
By Sarah Brightman and Josh Gorban

Sarah:
There for me, every time I’ve been away
Will you be there for me, thinking of me everyday
Are you my destiny, words I never dared to say
Will you be there for me?

Just think of you and me, we could never tow the line
It’s such a mystery just to hear you say you’re mine
And while you’re close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

Josh:
When you’re feeling cold and all the city streets are grey
Walking all along and watching how the children play
Voices in the wind and faces from the past go dancing by
They’re asking why

Both:
Will you be there for me, everytime I go away
Will you be there for me, thinking of me everyday
Are you my destiny, words I never dared to say
Will you be there for me?

Sarah:
And while you’re close to me, so close to me
Just hold me

Josh:
Can you really want me more for than a little while?
What are the stories hiding there behind your smile?
Wishes in a dream and figures in a world that I could share
And everywhere

Both:
Will you be there for me
Will there ever come a day when all the world can see
Things were meant to be that way
Will you be there for me?
Can you hear the people say
That you’re just
There for me

Josh:
There for me
Sarah:
There for me

Background to Gen 21

Genesis 21 can be broken up into 3 parts
Gen 21:1-7: The birth of Isaac, the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham
Gen 21:8-19: Sending away of Hagar and Ishmael
Gen 21:22-34: Abraham’s covenant with Abimelech.

Questions

  1. How did God show his compassion to Ishmael?
  2. Why did Abimelech make a covenant with Abraham?

Answers and Thoughts

  1. God show his compassion for Ishmael when he spoke to Hagar and to provide a well for the child’s survival. The bible records that it is God who heard the cry of Ishmael (Gen 21:17-18). Although the birth of Ishmael not something that please God, God still hear the prayer of Abraham about Ishmael and made him a great nation too (Gen 17:20-21).
  2. Abimelech can see that God is with Abraham (Gen 21:22-23). He wanted to ensure that there would be peace between him and Abraham.
