Background to Gen 22

Genesis 22 talks about the pinnacle of Abraham faith. In this chapter, God gave Abraham a very big test. He wants Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering to the Lord.

But just when Abraham was about to take the knife and slay his son, God provided a ram for Abraham to complete his sacrifice.

God gave Abraham even more blessing for this act of faith.

  1. How can we know that Abraham is confident that Isaac would not be harm in any way?
  2. How can we see the faith of Abraham as well as the faith of Isaac from this story?

Answers and Thoughts

  1. Abraham when he was on this trip gave a very specific instruction to his servants that they would return back to them after the sacrifice. (Gen 22:5). In fact the Author of Hebrews commented that Abraham believed in the promise of God (Heb 11:: 17-19) and is very confident that God will raise Isaac up even if he is dead.
Sometimes in our Christian walk in life, are we able to follow Gods instructions fully? Over here, God gave Abraham a very difficult instruction to follow. And only by following Gods command then will we receive blessings from God.
  2. Abraham faith can be seen throughout the Journey. If we were to read of God’s promises to Abraham in Gen 17:19. It would not have make sense that God wanted to kill Isaac, so Abraham moved on without any doubt.

Isaac’s faith can be seen that he did not resist Abraham and willingly allow Abraham to bind him up and to be laid on the Altar. Isaac could have easily struggled to run away, yet he was obedient to God all the way,
