February 2010

Hmm When i first heard this song it was from my brother, and it was an army marching song… And it was singing about eating worms.. later on I did a google for it then i realise the oringinal tune is called “Polly Wolly Doodle”, its a popular children song. According to Wikipedia,

“Polly Wolly Doodle” is a song first published in a Harvard student songbook in 1880.

It was also sang by the famous Shirley Temple in the movie “The Littlest Rebel” and her versions goes
Oh! I eat watermelon and I have for years,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;
I like watermelon but it wets my ears,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day.

Maybe grass tastes good to a moo cow’s mouth,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;
But I like chicken ’cause I’m from the south,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day.

Fare-thee well,
Fare-thee well,
Mister gloom be on your way,
If you think you’re gonna worry,
you can stop it in a huury,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day!

A woodpecker pecks till he gets his fill,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;
But the woodpecker pays ’cause it’s on his bill,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day.

Oh! I feed my pigs with molasses yam,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day;
And they should be sweeter than they really am,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day.

Fare-thee well,
Fare-thee well,
Mister gloom be on your way,
Tho’ you haven’t any money,
you can still be bright and sunny,
sing Polly-wolly-doodle all the day!

This is the official version

with curly eyes and laughing hair
sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
Fare thee well, fare thee well,
fare thee well my fairy Fay
for I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna

I thought I heard a chicken sneeze
sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
Oh he sneezed so hard with the whooping cough
sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
he sneezed his head and his tail right off

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
fare thee well my fairy Fay
for I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna
sing Polly Wolly Doodle
sing Polly Wolly Doodle
sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day

Actually, the real thing about this song, is that I am dedicating this to my good friends boss who thinks the entire country loves him because he used to head one of the smaller company in the local Telco. Once my friend tried to use his boss name to get “competitive data” and the customer replied (Filpping the pages of the book with the data that my friend needs, then closing the book suddenly he smiled) “I do not like your boss, he is so mean to me, why must i provide him this data? Let me be honest, I am the technical advisor  and i will make sure his response will not pass me” then he smiled.

This same boss like to live in his past splendor and keep telling people how he was the “CEO” of one of the company of the local telco. Till today, he still intimidate the telcos staff by calling the CEO of the telco to complain about every little thing that can happen.

I realise there are so many versions of this song, you can just do a google on “Nobody likes me everybody hates me” to read them. Here i will post my favourite Edited version

Title: Nobody likes me (I gonna eat some worm)
Lyrics: The Hesitant Prize Fighter

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
I’m gonna eat some worms
Big fat juicy ones, Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm.

Chomp off their heads and squeeze out the juice
And throw their tails away
Nobody knows how I survive
On worms three times a day.

Ok… lets just get the tune from Shirley temple and lets start singing this

To those that has been wondering, what happened to the poor Hesitant Prize Fighter since the last post… Actually, things has not been too well and I have been trying hard to piece together all the broken pieces in my life.

So, this is my first post for the year 2010, and I wish everyone a happy Lunar new year. A few days ago on the new years eve, I was talking to my fellow friends about “Old Reflections and New Resolutions”.

In fact every new year is a blessing from God and every new year eve is a good time for Christians to reflect, to consider his faith as well as to make new resolutions in life. The Chinese often has a saying”一日之计在于晨,一年之计在于春 ” therefore we should make good use of the opportunity to plan for our year ahead.

Old Reflection:
As the previous year was drawing close, I usually like to consider two types of event that happens for the previous year.
1. The good things that happen( IE: Blessings from God, happiness)
2. The not so good things that happen (IE: Losing a job, falling sick)

Well I guess most of us remembers the bad things more than the good things. A lot of times we tend to dwell on the not so nice things that happens. But what should a Christians perspective be in times like that?

Eccl 7:13-14: Consider the work of God; For who can make straight what He has made crooked? In the day of prosperity be joyful, But in the day of adversity consider: Surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, So that man can find out nothing that will come after him.

Sometimes, when good happens to us. It could be because of the following reason.
1. It is a blessing that God gave as we follow his words (Deut 28:1-14)

So, thats why, when Christian receive blessing from God. He should,be thankful to God for his blessings, and resolve to follow God even more. And when you receive your blessing, be always prepared to share and take care of the other brother and sisters in need (Matt 23:31-46)

When Bad things happen to Christians, it could be due to the following reason
1. It could be a punishment from God for the wrong things we have done
2. Or it can be a trial from God to help us improve and to make our faith pure (1 Pet 4:6-7).

So, what should Christians do in times of adversary? We should
1. Reflect within ourselves, consider if we had sin against God.
2. If it is a trial from God, pray to God to give us the strength to over come it.
3. Take our trials with Joy (Jas 1:2-4) remembering the result of the trial.

Actually, as we have seen earlier.. Good and bad things came from God. and I often like to remind myself of Rom 8:28 which reads

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

A lot of times i have to ask myself, whether i would love God.. even in the midst of all these trouble… If I still love God, I should believe that God allows all things to work together for my benefit, no matter if its good or bad.

That kinda reminded me of a story that i heard when i was a boy its called “塞翁失马,焉知非福”

So there was a old man who took part in races, he had a beautiful horse that help him win many races. One day, this horse broke out from his stable, and fled into the woods So every man in the village gathered.. and commented on his misfortune. Yet this old man claimed “Good or bad, I do not know”

So many months has passed, the horse did not return, that is one day, the horse came back to the stable, and this many months of running in the woods, he came back with a entire train of wild horses. And suddenly, the old man is not with many good horses. This is when he entire village applauded, thanking God for his good fortune. Yet this old man claimed “Good or bad, I do not know”

So one day, his son wanted to learn how to ride a horse, so he choose one of the wild horses that was untamed. So the horse threw her rider onto the ground, his son broke his back and became paralysed. This time, the village lamented that it is indeed a bad fortune. But the old man being sad, still said. “Good or bad, I do not know”.

Finally, his village when to war, the Khan rounded out all the youths in the village to be part of the army. Then the Khan marched off to war, with all the youth.. When the war was over, all the young man of the village never returned to their home. They were all killed in the war, except for the son of the old man. He was crippled and therefore could not be drafted into the military.

So therefore, from this story, we realise that it is difficult to just judge if an incident is good or bad. Therefore, we should always learn to trust God and believe that all things work together for the good of those who love him.

Besides reflecting on the good and the bad, Christians should also take pulse of their faith for the past years by asking the following questions
1. How often have we prayed to God for ourselves as well as our friends and love ones?
2.Have we been reading the bible often and have we strive to understand the will of God?
3. Have we tried to preach to others about our faith and whether have we tried to lead people who are seeking God bad to him?
4. Have we seek to establish a personal relationship with God , be closer to him and to worship him?

Prayers are important to our spiritual lives, as they are your communication channel to God.
a. We can entrust our problems before God (Philip 4:6)
b. Besides entrusting our problems, we should always pray for everyone around us.
c. Recall the many miracles recorded by the bible with regards to prayer (Acts records of Peters release from Prison a result of the church prayers)

Reading the bible is important to our lives as Christians
a. God gave scriptures for Christians to learn from, it can point you to salvation as well as provide instructions to teach us how to be righteous (2 Tim 3:16)
b. Christians who resolved to meditate and ponder over the words of God will be blessed (Jos 1:8, Ps 1:1-3)

Preaching the Gospel should be one of the priorities in our life
a. Preaching the gospel of Salvation is one of the main commission given to us by Jesus
b. God has appointed us to be ambassadors of the kingdom of God (2 Cor 5:20-21)
a. The world was blinded sin, which is the reason why lawlessness appear
b. Jesus has come to redeem us from sin
c. Therefore he had commissions Christians to be his ambassadors to teach people how to reconcile themselves with God (Mk 16:15-18)

Church services are important to our lives.
God wanted Christians to worship on sabbath, as this is the day that he had blessed (Gen 2:2-3, Ex 20:8-11)
a. God wanted Christians to call that day a delight, and to refrain from working and to take a good rest, as well as to worship him (Is 58:13-14)

Besides the Sabbath, God through the author of Hebrews encouraged Christians to meet together often especially as we see the end approaching (Heb 10:24-25)

Since we know the as the days go by, the second coming of God is at hand, Christians should take this year end to think about the words of Elder Peter (1 Pet 4: 7-10)

But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

New Resolutions
After considering so much from the previous year, I would encourage everyone to make the following resolutions

1. Resolve to love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might (Deut 6:
5 )
a. Resolve to build a personal relationship with God through prayers and reading the bible
b. Resolve to come to church more often
c. Resolve to prepare for his second coming
i .Being ready for our work as Ambassadors to God
ii. Resolve to serve God with all our talents
d. Resolve to love each other with the love of God.
