February 2012

I was driving back home when the radio was playing this song, and the lyrics kind of caught my attention. Hence I got curious and I went to get the lyrics.

I must say it is a very difficult piece to translate due to the way it was written. None the less this is the first try, and I would hope to get your comments to improve the lyrics.

This song was sang by 张雨生, a Taiwanese singer who passed away from a car accident on 1997.

I have chosen to use the term “Duplicity” for i noticed many people translated the title this way, i seen the defination and i felt that it is a apt description.

According to Webster dictionary, Duplicity means  “contradictory doubleness of thought, speech, or action; especially: the belying of one’s true intentions by deceptive words or action.”

Somehow i feel that artist of that time are very expressive in their lyrics.

Title: 口是心非
Artist :

The English Translation

Title: DUPLICITY
Artist: Tom Chang

Deceitfully,
your passionate promise
dissipated together with the west wind

Like foolish dream,
that mutual love held dear
wilted away like a withered flower

Like a distant spark
, my passion had once
illuminated that splendid sky above us.

Yet out of the blue,
you heartlessly choose to let go
at that time you are needed the most

(Chorus X2 )

So love and hatred intertwined, wasted away,
only fearing I am suffering without a clause.

So my emotions fluctuates as I mourned in silence,
waiting for the day, my pain will be released.

That deceptive expression
which concealed the truth ,
was arched deeply within my heart
Without a defence,
the result of love,
is like a broken and barren mountain top

The beating of my pure heart
that once untrammelled with
a passionate rhythm

Was destroyed, when
you passionately choose to
bankrupt my obvious feelings for you

(Chorus X2)

Will be freed
Will be freed

I was listening to a song sang by Emi Fujita in and I find the lyrics of this song really interesting.

It was written by Dan Fogelberg and its titled as Longer. He sang it in the album Phoenix at 1979. The version that I heard was re-sang by Emi Fujita.

I did a big of a back ground to see how he got the inspiration for the lyrics, apparently the song  writer was in a holiday at Maui and one night as he was lounging in the hammock and looking up at the skies, he pen down the lyrics.

Hmm well.. i guess this song should be dedicated to all the loving couples around me.

Title: Longer
Lyrics : Dan Fogelberg
Artist : Dan Fogelberg, Emi Fujita  (and I guess many others)

Longer than there’ve been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew

Longer than there’ve been stars up in the heavens
I’ve been in love with you.

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you.

I’ll bring fires in the winters
You’ll send showers in the springs
We’ll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I’ll be in love with you.
I’ll be in love with you.

Longer than there’ve been fishes In the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there’ve been stars Up in the heavens
I’ve been in love with you
I am in love with you…

As shared on our previous post, we will be looking at the following characters

1. King Saul (1 Sam 15, 1618)
2. Judas Iscariot (Jn 12,13, Matt 26,27)
3. Ananias And Sapphira (Acts 5)

Today we would be looking at Judas Iscariot. Everyone knows that Judas is the disciple that betrayed Jesus. While there are gnostic gospels that give praises to him. He is famous for committing suicide at the end of the day.

Dispelling Common Misconceptions Of Judas : The Choosing Of Jesus

I remember once in a discussion with friends someone highlighted the fact, that Jesus chose the 12 disciples out of an entire night of prayer (Lk 6:12-13). That was when someone commented, “But yet he chose Judas”

Does that mean that the prayer of Jesus was ineffective? Personally i feel that Jesus prayers was effective and Judas must have started out as a good person.

If we were to remember the Gods choosing of King Saul in the previous post, King Saul did not start up as a villain when he was first king of Israel. In fact he started up being humble and loving to the people.

Paul told Christians not to give place to the devil (Eph 4:27 ). and we learn how the devils entrapped King Saul and how he finally failed in his faith.

The same could be sad about Judas, he allowed a place for the devil to work, Judas allowed himself to become a son of perdition.

Let us look at what Jesus had to say in the prayer of Gethsemane

“While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. “  – Jesus (Jn 17:12)

You can see Jesus protecting the 12 disciples so that they will not be lost, yet there is one of them that have fallen.

Dispelling Common Misconceptions Of Judas : Demonic Possession Of Judas

There are some over zealous devil haters who tend to push the blame of the fall of Judas as a case of demonic possessions.

They tend to use the account of John and Luke where they said

“Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.  So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.” – Luke The Physicians (Lk 22:3-4)

“Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” – Elder John (Jn 13:27)

The original Greek word for Entered is  “εισηλθεν”  Eiserchomai : To Enter or to Arise Or Come in , note that it can be used  in both literal or figurative sense.

As we have covered in Part 1. The devil had no power to touch any one of the Lords disciples, just as Elder john said

We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.” – John (1 Jn 5:18)

Therefore, Judas fall started when he allowed places for the devil to tempt him and he slowly making himself son of perditions.

It is not fair to just make a sweeping statement that it was Satan who controlled Judas to do it.

In this blog entry, lets example the instances which Judas gave a place for the devil to work

The Greed Of Judas

Judas was the person in charge of the money box of the ministry of Jesus. There are instances where money is given to the poor and needy. But over here John, being able to see the heart of Judas recounted the incident at the anointing of Jesus in Bethany.

“But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,  “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denariiand given to the poor?”  This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. “- John (Jn 12:4-7)

300 Denarii is about a year worth of wages, that means, if a average worker earns $1800.00 a month, 300 denarii would be worth $216 000 .

A typical worker will have to save a long time before he can afford a item of that price. And you can see Mary of Bethany offering it all up to Jesus. She broke the bottle of Spikenard so that none of it can ever be kept.

Yet at the same time you can see Judas feeling a pitch, he was thinking, if he had 300 denarius in the money box, he would be able to steal it and use if or himself.

It is not known that how many times he had taken from the money box, but as we have describes earlier the devil is constantly on the prowl looking at our actions. He must have been very excited when he saw Judas reaching for the box, as now he can see the weakness of Judas.

Slowly he enticed Judas to betray Jesus for a small amount of 30 pieces of silver Matt 26:14-16). By the time Judas felt remorseful of his actions, he could only throw the pieces of silver to the priest and committed suicide, thus falling into Perdition

Paul once told Timothy

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  – Paul (1 Tim 6:9-10)

While that doesn’t mean that all Christians had to remain poor and down, we have to be mindful not to allow the love of money and possession to grab us. The moment when it happens, satan will gain a very big foothold into our lives.

The Hypocrisy of Judas

Judas is a character that is known for his hypocrisy, it can be seen in a few occasions,

1. Incident at Bethany

“Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denariiand given to the poor?”  – Judas.

John was very blunt about this statement made by Judas, he said that Judas did not say its because he cared for the poor, he said it for his own selfish gain. The interesting thing to take note that only john managed to see through the act of Judas.

this would mean that Judas statement would have left a great impression that he is extremely charitable man.  It is a show of his hypocrisy.

2. Just before the last supper

“ Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”
He said to him, “You have said it.” – Matthew the Tax Collector (Matt 26:25)

Just before the last supper started, Jesus made it very clear to Judas that he is aware of Judas betrayal, and yet while every disciples was distressed and was asking Jesus whether it would be them who would betray him.

Judas joined in and asked Jesus (well aware of his own intention to betray him), “Lord is it I?”

This round Jesus told him straight in the eyes, “You have said it” but yet he was unfazed by the fact that his betrayal is known.

3. The Sign Of Betrayal

“Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.”  – Judas (Matt 25:48)

He had chosen the worst signal to betray the Lord, a kiss is a greeting of peace in the mid-eastern culture. Whenever the people meet, they will greet each other with a greeting of peace and a kiss.

Ironically that was the thing he wanted to do to Jesus in order to lead to his guards to capture Jesus. Judas had chosen a to greet Jesus peace when there is no peace. It is a sign of his hypocrisy.

As Christians we should be careful from being hypocrite. They are written in many places ,(Lk 12:1, Rom 12:9, 1 Pet 2:1-3)

Hypocrisy is a foothold for the devils to work, and our actions would not just hurt a few, but may endanger the faith of the people around as well.

Final Foothold Of The Devil (Un-repentance)

We have shared in the earlier on King Saul, saying that Saul’s un-repentance left a foothold for the devil.

Judas similarly was given a lot of chance to repent but he did not take it. According to the gospel of John there were so many, instances of Jesus trying to turn Judas back. The instances are

1. Jesus washes the feet of Judas out of love (Jn 13:1-17) He said that Judas is not clean

2. He identifies Judas betrayal by dipping bread and giving it to Judas (Jn 13:26)

It is only when Judas took the bread, and ate it, which finally sealed his fate as the son of perdition. (Jn 13:27)

Before that  Jesus has given Judas ample chances to return, only when he insist in doing what he wanted to do, finally Jesus gave up and said “What you do, do quickly.” Jn 13:27.

That is when Satan gain the entire foothold in his life, he finished his deeds. And his sin that is conceive finally gave place to death.

Finally when he felt remorseful, but he no longer had a chance to repent.. He killed himself, hanging himself in the tree.

Conclusion

We can see how Judas gave place to the devil, how he open a small foot hold by being a thief,, how he allowed himself to become a hypocrite.. and when that sin is full grown, there was no turning back from him.

Let us remember to turn back to God whenever se that our hearts are not right. Finally let us remember to keep our hearts pure just like how it is written

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Prov 4:23
